How I Used Writing To Overcome My Mental Health Struggles

From Writers With Mental illness: Like many other writers with mental health struggles, using writing to heal has been a huge part of my mental health journey. When my first symptoms of Bipolar Disorder and a dissociative disorder were emerging, I began journaling. To keep from drowning in my emotions, I wrote about my extreme feelings of joy, anger, and depression. I wrote about my abusive, untreated father with bipolar disorder and the abandonment I felt. Anyway, we prayed for people as they passed between us. That was great. After the tunnel, as I sometimes do, I found myself taking other people’s comments personally. They may not even be directed at me but there I was. I reminded myself that the only opinion of me that matters is my own and God’s. That’s it. This evening I ran across one of my favorite podcasts, Fresh Hope For Mental Health with Pastor Brad Hoefs and he…
